Artist Statement
Though the central subject or theme of a piece may change, at the end of the day, my work is ultimately about obsession. With a deep rooted longing to achieve meticulous detail across the working space, the challenge between an original intention or idea against an unforgiving material shifts into something akin to an addictive relationship. Every cut of the blade against the wood becomes a thing of permanence, every mistake recorded unable to be erased leaving frustration in its wake. But when it is docile, there is room for exploration pushing against the boundaries to see how much refinement it can withhold.
Will the wood be gentle and pliant as it glides with the grain? Or will it be rough and unyielding as I stubbornly work against it?
And yet, I always seem to return it. Despite the frustrations that will surely await me, I come back to the material doubled over in an all-consuming mark making ritual. At the beginning, yes, there is always a plan, an aim, an intention, but the result will always be out of my control, always at the whim of my chosen material.
